The Republican Party of Grayson and Hardin counties has selected a nominee to run for the remainder of former 18th District Representative Tim Moore’s term.

Samara Rae Heavrin, of Leitchfield, was selected Saturday to run in the special election scheduled for November 5, the same day as Kentucky’s General Election. The 18th District covers all of Grayson County and a portion of Hardin County.

After serving more than 12 years, Moore resigned the seat last week, effective immediately, to spend more time in Christian ministry.

Heavrin, a 2010 graduate of Grayson County High School and a 2014 graduate of Western Kentucky University, said about being her party’s pick, “I am honored to be the Republican nominee for the 18th District and hope to have the opportunity to serve my hometown and home region as their voice in Frankfort.”

After graduating from WKU, Heavrin moved to Washington, D.C. where she participated in a semester-long internship with U.S. Congressman Brett Guthrie. In January 2015, she began working as an aide to U.S. Senator Rand Paul.

In January 2017, Heavrin moved back to Kentucky to serve as Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball’s Unclaimed Property Director, but in short order was promoted to Director of Initiatives in Ball’s office.

Heavrin said her experience working in Frankfort and in campaigns around the state have given her the knowledge needed to effectively serve her constituents.

“Through my current job and as a volunteer for several statewide campaigns, I have gained extensive knowledge of the Commonwealth, implemented conservative policies, learned how to use public resources efficiently, and worked with the Kentucky General Assembly on legislation that promotes fiscal responsibility and government transparency,” she said.

Heavrin will take on the Democratic nominee, Becky Miller, of Leitchfield, in the November 5 special election.
