The Lady Cougar volleyball team picked up a big, 12th District win Tuesday at Whitesville as they defeated the Lady Raiders 3-2 (5-25, 27-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-13) to stay undefeated in District play. The JV squad lost in three seta (17-21, 21-19, 18-21).

The Lady Cougars were never in the first set after yielding the game’s first 10 points, and scored just two points off their serve in a 5-25 thrashing.

They played much better in the second set, trading the lead with the Lady Raiders in the early going. But with the Lady Cougars leading by two, 15-13, the Lady Raiders scored eight straight points to take the lead, 21-15.

The Lady Cougars responded with four straight to pull to within two of the lead, but the Lady Raiders moved to a set-point at 24-20.

Grayson County then fought off four straight to tie it at 24-24 before junior Jenna McDowell had a block at the net to give the Lady Raiders another set point. A hitting error gave the ball back to the Lady Cougars at 25-25, and junior Ella Robinson had back-to-back kills to allow the Lady Cougars to tie the match at a set apiece.

Grayson County trailed by one, 3-4 in the third set when Robinson took the serve and served 14 straight points to give the Lady Cougars a commanding, 17-4 lead. Junior Chloe Cox had five kills in the run. At set point, Robinson put away another kill to give the Lady Cougars a 2-1 lead.

Grayson County trailed from the start in the fourth set. The Lady Raiders moved to a set point at 19-24, but a Robinson kill staved off defeat and gave the serve back to senior Maddie Duvall.

Duvall began by serving an ace off the tape and two straight Raider hitting errors brought the Lady Cougars to within a point of a tie, but a Cougar hitting error gave the win to Trinity and set up the 15-point final set.

The Lady Cougars scored the first four points of the set, then led 6-1 before the Lady Raider began to come back. A Cassidy Morris kill brought them to within a point at 10-9, but they would not get closer.

A Cox kill moved the Lady Cougars to a match point at 14-11, but Avery Barnett scored a kill to give the serve back to the Raiders.

McDowell had a block at the net to make it  14-13, but Cox blasted a kill off the block to give the Lady Cougars a hard-fought win.

With the win, the Lady Cougars moved to 8-4 on the season.
