A large fire broke late Monday morning out at Greenpoint Ag, an agricultural supply business located in the 1200 block of Hwy 261, southwest of Hardinsburg.

A Shelter-in-Place has been ordered for citizens in Hardinsburg and Garfield as fertilizer continues to burn, creating an unsafe atmosphere. Hardinsburg Mayor Wayne Macy said residents in the greater Hardinsburg area are advised to shut off air conditioners and heating units, as well as shut and lock all windows and doors.

Roadways and businesses have been evacuated, with many roads around the area of the fire being blocked.

Smoke from the fire is traveling east at about four miles per hour, according to officials. No information on injuries related to the fire is currently available.

Breckinridge County Schools issued the following statement:

Due to the possible chemical fire in the Hardinsburg area, Hardinsburg Elementary School, Breckinridge County Middle School, Breckinridge County High School, and our Area Technology Center are operating under a Shelter in Place. Students and staff are remaining indoors. Heating and air systems will also remain off at this time. All after-school events at the schools mentioned above will be cancelled this afternoon. Any changes to afternoon dismissal and/or transportation will be communicated when a decision is made. Breckinridge County Schools will continue to follow Breckinridge County’s Emergency Management recommendations. Student and staff safety will continue to be our top priority.
