A father has been arrested after his newborn son suffered a skull fracture along with other serious injuries.

Authorities in Bourbon County were notified by the University of Kentucky Medical Center pediatric intensive care unit that a three-month-old baby from Paris arrived at the hospital with skull and rib fractures and bruising, according to media reports. The child’s mother told police that the baby had been in the care of his father, 28-year-old James McCarty, of Paris, while she was at work.

While being questioned by Paris Police Department detectives, McCarty claimed the child had accidents on a swing set and in the bathtub. He additionally said that he dropped his cellphone, with the phone striking the baby in the head, causing a knot.

Investigators, though, determined the injuries were much too severe to have been caused as McCarty said.

He was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal abuse (child under the age of 12) and lodged in the Bourbon County Regional Detention Center.

The baby remains in the critical care unit.
