Haycraft, Whobrey and Schultz named to 3rd Region All-Season Team; Two Others named All-Tournament

With the Cougar Soccer team’s season-ending last week against Muhlenberg County, the 3rd Region has announced its’ award winners for the 2019 season.

Grayson County’s Matthew Haycraft was named to the first-team all-region team. The junior midfielder finished the season second on the team with 14 goals and led the way with 19 assists. Haycraft’s assist total is good for the 12th best in the entire state of Kentucky.

Senior goalkeeper Brady Whobrey was named to the second team. His seven shutouts on the year was good for the 11th best in the state and tied for the best mark in the region.

Wyatt Schultz was named as an honorable mention for the all-region team. The senior led the team with 23 goals. In the opening game of the season, Schultz broke a program record by scoring 8 goals in an 11-3 win over Russellville. That number is tied for the third-most goals in a single game in KHSAA history. Schultz was only the 12th player to ever score at least eight goals in a single game at that time. 

Following the completion of the region tournament, both Haycraft and sophomore Josh Stevenson were named to the all-tournament team. Both players scored in the loss to Muhlenberg County.

The Cougars finished their season with a record of 12-7-2. This season, they finished with their most wins since 2014, won their first district title since 2014 and had their second straight 10+ win season for the first time in team history.
