Lady Cougars win 12th District Championship, 3-1 over Trinity

For the first time since 2010, the Lady Cougar volleyball team have been crowned champions of the 12th District following their 3-1 win Tuesday night over the host Whitesville Trinity Lady Raiders.

Junior Ella Robinson had 26 kills in the match and senior Alexis Hart had 47 assists as the Lady Cougars won 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 25-15. Hart, Robinson and junior Kenzie Skaggs were all named to the All-Tournament Team following the match.

The Lady Cougars trailed just once in the first set. With sophomore libero Taylor Pedley serving, the Lady Raiders reeled off eight straight points to lead 15-13. The Lady Cougars won the serve back and with junior Chloe Cox serving, won four straight points to retake the lead 18-15, a lead they would not give back.

Grayson County had their first set-point at 24-19, only to see the Lady Raiders win the next serve. Junior Brieanna Boll then had a kill to give the Lady Cougars the first-set win.

Changing sides for the second set, the Lady Raiders started off on a 6-0 run. The Lady Cougars then started the long road back and actually took a one-point lead at 19-18, but could not hold it.

Tied at 23-23, Trinty’s Hannah Nash put away a kill to give the Lady Raiders a set-point, and senior Morgan Kinsey tied the match at a set apiece with a kill.

The Lady Cougars never trailed in the third set and Robinson had six kills. With a set-point at 24-15, a Lady Raider hitting error gave Grayson County the third-set win.

As in the third set, the Lady Cougars never trailed in the fourth, with Robinson coming up with nine kills. With match-point at 24-15, Robinson dinked a ball into an empty space to give the Lady Cougars the championship.

The Lady Cougars will enter next week’s 3rd Region Championship as a district winner and will play a runner-up team in the tournament, which will be held at Hancock County.
