The city of Clarkson has been awarded money for paving work from discretionary funds released by Gov. Matt Bevin.

On Friday, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet official Mark Welch awarded Clarkson $47,400 for paving work to be done on Spring and First Streets.

In order to receive the money in the highly competitive process, Clarkson officials remitted to the state a request for funds for multiple roadway upgrades, followed by an evaluation of each request by state officials.

Mayor Bonnie Henderson said the city turned in to the state 17 roads that need some form of paving work, with Spring and First Streets qualifying for the money.

The $47,400 Clarkson will receive gives the city a total of $64,000 for future paving work. The city will again qualify to request paving funds in the spring.

The money, which originates from the state fuel tax, comes from a new program, Small Towns and Rural Transportation (START), that is allocated to the governor for him to disperse.
