Kentucky State Police is investigating after a rifle was fired by two troopers into the floor and through the ceiling of the apartment below, narrowly missing an 11-year-old girl.

On Saturday night, the Oldham County Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting at an apartment at Oldham Oaks on Frederick Lane, in La Grange. Deputies discovered the shot came from an apartment occupied by two newly-minted Kentucky State Troopers, Landon Terry and Justin Gross. Both men graduated from KSP’s academy three weeks ago but continue to undergo field training.

The family living below the troopers told deputies the two men did not check on their well-being after the accidental discharge.

“The most frustrating part about all of this is that they did not come check on us,” the mother of the family, KeeKee Todd, told WAVE3.com.

KSP spokesman Josh Lawson said one of the focuses of the investigation will be the troopers’ not contacting the family after the incident.

In addition to the 11-year-old girl, the family has two other children, ages eight and two, who were in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

The troopers told investigators they did not know the rifle, which is not a service weapon, was loaded and didn’t intend to fire the gun. Both men have been placed on leave until the investigation is complete.

When the KSP investigation is concluded, investigators will work with the Oldham County Sheriff’s Office in determining whether charges should be filed.
