For the first time since 2004, the Grayson County football program will have a new head coach starting next season.

On Friday, Cougar Football head coach Ed Smart gathered his team in the lobby of the high school to tell them that he was “leaving the team” after 16 seasons.

This past year, Smart led the Cougars to a 7-4 record which included a 6-0 start; their best since the 2012 season.

Smart finishes his career at GCHS with a record of 84-94. He has the most overall wins and playoff wins/appearances in the 46-year history of the Grayson County football program.

Over the 16 years as the head man, the Cougars finished with a winning record in eight of them while winning at least 9 games in four of those years.

A search for his replacement will begin immediately.

It is expected that the 2020 Cougars will open the regular season at home on August 21st against Hancock County.
