Lady Cougars slay Dragons 48-40 in Russellville

Playing in the opening round of the Russellville Food Bank Classic, the Lady Cougars defeated Warren Central’s Lady Dragons 48-40.

The Lady Cougars put three players into double figures, led by junior Rachael Snyder, who finished with 16 points. Senior Kenzie Renfrow scored 15 points, while freshman Annie Kiper tossed in 10 points.

Grayson County never trailed in the game, though the Lady Dragons did manage to tie it once, 16-16 at the 4:14 mark of the second period. The Lady Cougars then closed out the second period with a 9-2 run to lead by seven points, 25-18 at the half.

When Kiper stole the ball and scored on a lay-up at the 2:55 mark of the third quarter, the Lady Cougars held their largest lead of the game, 15 points at 39-24. They led by 11, 39-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Central’s Kyleigh Ray opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to cut the lead to eight points, 39-31, but Renfrow answered with back-to-back lay-ups to push the lead back up to 12 points, 43-31. The Lady Dragons were never closer than eight the rest of the way.

Ray led the Lady Dragons with 14 points.

In addition to her 15 points, Renfrow added a team-high eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. Junior Ella Robinson scored four points and pulled down three rebounds before fouling out with 4:50 left in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Aryssa Riggs scored two points, while sophomore Raigan Cave had one to complete the Lady Cougar scoring. Cave also added five rebounds, an assist and three steals to her game.
