A commercial printing company that is one of the largest employers in a Kentucky county has announced it will close three plants this year.

The Chicago-based LSC Communications Inc. confirmed on Tuesday that among the closures would be its plant in Glasgow that was operated as RR Donnelley until 2016, news outlets reported. It is currently the second largest manufacturer in
Barren County with nearly 600 employees, and as RR Donnelley it was the largest, according to Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development statistics.

LSC said the closures come as part of an effort to significantly reduce costs as printing industry trends change.

The plant is expected to make layoffs gradually ahead of its complete closure this summer, LSC and Barren county leaders said. Glasgow and Barren County officials will work to help the displaced employees, Economic Authority Executive Director Maureen Carpenter said.

An LSC plant in Strasburg, Virginia, and one in Mattoon, Illinois, will also close, according to a statement from the LSC Chairman and CEO.

The Glasgow plant’s closure leaves a void in the local economy, Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Ernie Myers told The Bowling Green Daily News. Barren County Judge-Executive Micheal Hale told Glasgow Daily Times the news is “devastating.”
