New state Rep. Samara Heavrin, R-Leitchfield, has filed two pieces of legislation that will aid military men and women and their families as they seek to acquire special military license plates.

This legislation, if signed into law, would continue to move Kentucky forward as a more military friendly state, according to Heavrin.

“Our military personnel have answered the call of duty and faithfully served our country,” Heavrin said. “They have selflessly sacrificed so that we can continue to have the freedoms we enjoy today. The least we can do is make it easier for them to acquire license plates that showcase their military service.”

House Bill 277 would waive the initial and renewal fee required for a special military license plate for veterans if they receive 100 percent disability payments because of an injury suffered during combat or through their military service.

House Bill 276 allows for the surviving spouse of a member of the U.S Armed Forces to be eligible for a special military license plate.

“I am proud to sponsor simple measures that will provide a financial relief to our disabled veterans and their spouses,” Heavrin stated. “My grandfather was a Korean War veteran, and it is important to me to do everything in my power to honor the service and sacrifice our veterans and military personnel have made.”

The legislation may be viewed on the Legislative Research Commission public website, legislature.ky.gov.
