Lady Cougars fall at Breck, 56-53

Trailing by three points with 3:26 left in the game, the Lady Cougars had six possessions to try t0 tie or get closer last Friday evening at Breckinridge County, but had empty trips as they lost 56-53 to fall to 14-6 on the season.

This was a close, back-and-forth game from the start. Grayson County led by as many as six points in the first period, the last time coming at 17-11 with 1:40 left. They led by four points, 17-13 heading into the second period.

Back-to-back threes by Breck’s Cassidy McDaniel and Sydney Tucker put the Lady Tigers in front 19-17 at the 6:48 mark. There were then four lead changes and a tie the rest of the period. Breck’s Lily Critchelow scored on a put-back basket with 12 seconds left that gave the Lady Tigers a one-point lead, 30-29 at the half.

Breck then opened the third quarter on a 15-5 run to lead by 11 points, 45-34 with 5:00 left in the period. They led by nine, 52-43 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Two free throws by McDaniel with 3:57 left to play gave the Lady Tigers a 12-point lead, 56-44. They would not score again. The Lady Cougars scored nine unanswered points to pull to within three points of the lead, 56-53 with 2:26 left.

Following a Grayson County turnover, Rachael Snyder went to the line in the bonus with 1:53 left, but missed the first shot. Two more turnovers followed before Breck’s Natalee Tabor went to the line for bonus free throws with 20 seconds left, but she missed the front end also.

Another Grayson County turnover followed before Tabor went to the line again with 8.3 seconds left. Once again she missed the front end and the Lady Cougars called a timeout with six seconds left.

Back on the floor, the Lady Cougars got the ball quickly up the floor to a wide-open Gracie Franklin, who let fly with a shot from well behind the arc. The shot missed badly and Rachael Snyder rebounded the ball and put up a shot at the buzzer that was also off the mark.

McDaniel led all scorers in the game with 23 points, and Aleigha Mucker added 17 points.

Kenzie Renfrow led the Lady Cougars with 16 points. Snyder recorded a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds. She also added three assists and a steal.  Bailey Snyder finished with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals. Aryssa Riggs and Ella Robinson both finished with six points, while Raigan Cave had three to close out the scoring
