A wedding chapel in Cecilia has suffered devastating damage after a fire late Monday night.

Multiple fire departments responded to the fire at The Cecilian Chapel on Methodist Street Monday night at approximately 9:45, according to a report by The News-Enterprise. Crews battled the blaze well into Tuesday morning.

The fire appeared to start in the rear of the building. The rapidly-moving blaze rendered the structure a total loss.
The chapel, vacant for four years, held its first event since renovation in September 2019. The venue was the site of weddings, Christmas parties, baptisms, and baby showers, according to the newspaper. The last event held at the chapel was on January 18.

Mark and Anna Akins, owners of the former church property, spent about two-and-a-half years renovating the building.

The sanctuary was erected in 1902.
