Warren County continues to report a high number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases.

An emerging COVID-19 hot spot, Warren County reported 10 new cases Saturday, raising its total to 776 cases, second only to Jefferson County’s 1,865, according to the Kentucky Department for Public Health (Warren County has about 133,000 residents while Jefferson County has a population of roughly 770,00).

Over a recent five day period, May 12 to May 16, Warren County recorded 180 cases of the virus (36 per day), and since April 15 the county has confirmed 724 cases (22.3 per day).

The Herald-Leader reports the reasons for the COVID-19 surge in Warren County is at least partly due to expanded testing (nearly 7,500 tests administered), and positive cases among Perdue Farms’ employees who live in Warren County, as well as any family members they may have exposed to the virus.

Nearly 7,500 (5.6 percent of residents) tests had been performed in Warren County as of last week, according to the Barren River District Health Department. Two deaths in the county have been attributed to COVID-19.
