On Monday at his daily coronavirus (COVID-19) briefing, Gov. Andy Beshear said fewer than 200 new cases of the virus were confirmed on Sunday and Monday.

The governor announced 70 new cases were reported on Sunday and 120 on Monday. The new cases increase Kentucky’s COVID-19 total to 11,476 victims.

The combined 190 cases reported on Sunday and Monday comes on the heels of the commonwealth averaging nearly 300 new cases per day for four days last week — Between Wednesday and Saturday of last week, Kentucky had 1,168 COVID-19 cases confirmed, a four-day average of 292 per day.

“Both Sunday’s and Monday’s numbers are down, but we will have to be watching as this continues,” Beshear warned. “Keep getting tested. Every week since the week of May 11, we’ve had over 40,000 tests conducted in the commonwealth.”

Besehar reported two new deaths on Monday (after announcing a combined 12 deaths on Friday and Saturday), including a 51-year-old woman from Daviess County and 66-year-old Hardin County man. Those deaths raise the state’s COVID-19 death toll to 472 (4.1 percent fatality rate).

To date, 2,368 (20.6 percent) victims have been hospitalized with the virus, while 486 people are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. Officials report 958 (8.3 percent) patients have been treated in ICU, while 76 people are currently in intensive care.

At least 3,359 (29.3 percent) Kentuckians have recovered from the virus, and 285,358 (6.5 percent of the population) COVID-19 tests have been administered in the state.
