At his coronavirus (COVID-19) briefing on Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear reported 170 new cases of the virus were confirmed in Kentucky over the previous 24 hours.

The new cases increase the state’s total to 12,995 victims.

The three counties with the most newly confirmed cases were Jefferson (37), Fayette (18) and Warren (13) counties.

“We don’t want 170 new cases, but when you look at Arizona, a state that is one-and-a-half times our population (6.8 million), I believe, they had over 2,000 (actually, 2,392) new cases yesterday,” Beshear said. “There’s only about a 20,000 difference overall in how many tests have been (administered) out there. So, Kentuckians are doing a good job, but we’ve got to remember, what we see around us says it can come back very, very quickly.”

The governor also announced six new deaths Wednesday, raising the total to 518 (4.0 percent fatality rate) Kentuckians lost to the virus.

The deaths reported Wednesday were a 71-year-old man from Clay County; a 90-year-old woman from Fayette County; and four women, ages 45, 87, 93 and 95, from Jefferson County.

The four deaths from Jefferson County raise’s Kentucky’s most populous county’s fatalities to 182, about 35 percent of the commonwealth’s total COVID-19-related deaths.

Officials said 2,455 (18.9 percent) patients have been hospitalized with the virus, with 416 people currently in a hospital. To date, 971 (7.5 percent) victims have received treatment in ICU, with 61 patients currently in intensive care.

At least 3,444 Kentuckians have recovered from the virus, and 329,710 COVID-19 tests have been administered in the state.
