After the Grayson County Detention Center (GCDC) was the site of 25 coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, the facility now has only two inmates still actively ill.

On May 13, the first two cases of the virus at the detention center were announced. In the following few weeks, 21 additional inmates tested positive for coronavirus, as well as two staff members. One inmate, a 68-year-old man, died after contracting the virus.

In an announcement on the GCDC’s Facebook page on Wednesday, Jailer Jason Woosley noted that 20 inmates have now recovered, as have the two stricken deputies, leaving only two active COVID-19 cases.

Woosley previously said that “an entire section of the main facility” is being used to separate the general population of the jail from inmates in quarantine. Since March, every new intake at the facility has been placed in 14 day quarantine, with every person in quarantine undergoing a COVID-19 test.

The detention center has conducted 49 tests (30 inmates, 19 deputies) since the onset of the pandemic.

The GCDC houses between 500 and 600 inmates (at three locations) at any given time, and has about 120 staff members.
