People with family or friends in assisted living and long-term care facilities have not been allowed to visit their loved ones in-person since early March, but state officials said on Thursday that in-person visitor restrictions will be removed later this month.

Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Eric Friedlander announced that starting Monday, June 29, the state will allow visitation at assisted living and personal care homes, as well as group activities (10 or fewer people) in the facilities, communal dining, and off-site appointments.

“Kentuckians have patiently awaited since March 6 for the opportunity to see loved ones in long-term care facilities again; in person. We are pleased to say that plans are in place to ease back into certain activities,” Friedlander said, adding that resuming visitation and certain other activities will proceed without taking an eye off the threat that remains with COVID-19.

Additionally, beginning on July 15, visitation will resume in nursing homes and Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities.

Long-term care facilities in Kentucky have been hot spots for coronavirus (COVID-19) since the beginning of the pandemic, as at least 1,400 residents and 650 staff members have tested positive for the virus, while nearly 300 coronvirus deaths have been connected to long-term care facilities.
