Governor Andy Beshear will not overturn the start date set by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s (KHSAA) Board of Control.

On August 20th, the KHSAA voted 16-2 to allow for fall sports practice to begin on Monday with games starting the week of September 7th.

In the announcement of his decision during Monday’s briefing, Beshear said “We’re not going to overturn the decision and it’s not because I think it’s a good decision or a wise decision.”

Beshear added, “We risk a shortened season… Are we testing? Are we doing everything we can to keep them safe?”

Kentucky Public Health Director Steven Stack, MD, spoke at the briefing as well and said, “I hope Kentucky can be more successful than other states but the outlook is not good.”

When asked by a member of the media why he won’t step in, Beshear said, “At some point, every decision can’t be made by the governor. If we’re truly gonna beat this virus we need people throughout Kentucky making good responsible decisions for those around them.”

Student-athletes and families have joined together in support of #LetThemPlay. The movement was highlighted by a rally on Monday at the state capital in Frankfort.

With Beshear’s decision, the Grayson County High School sports season will begin on September 7th as the Cougar soccer team travels to Todd County Central with the Lady Cougar soccer team opens at home against Breckinridge County.

The Lady Cougar volleyball team will start with a home game against Meade County on September 8th with the cross country teams opening at the Central Hardin Fairgrounds Frenzy on the 12th.

The Cougar football team was scheduled to open against Fort Campbell on September 11th, but the Falcons will not play football this season. This date is still set as open.

Every Cougar football game and select soccer and volleyball games will be broadcast on K105 Digital Productions.
