Lady Cougar volleyball picks up two wins on Saturday

The Lady Cougar volleyball team took two wins on Saturday to move to 7-1 on the season, the best start in the history of the program.

In the morning game, the Lady Cougars defeated the Hancock County Lady Hornets 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17). In the afternoon game, they defeated the Western Hills Wolverines, from Frankfort, 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20).

Against Hancock, senior Ella Robinson led the team with 15 kills and 14 digs. Senior setter Brieanna Boll led the team with 22 assists.

The Lady Cougars never trailed in the first set, steadily pulling away from the Lady Hornets. Robinson had a kill at set-point to give them the first-set win.

The second set was close all the way, with the two teams staying within a point or two of one another. The Lady Cougars staved off one set point at 21-24, but a hitting error gave Hancock the second-set win.

Grayson County led the whole way in the third set, leading by as many as 13 points, 22-9, before the Lady Hornets made a comeback. They closed to within six points of the lead at 22-16 before a Robinson kill gave the serve back to the Lady Cougars.

Senior Kenzie Skaggs served an ace at set point to give the Lady Cougars the third set for a 2-1 lead.

At the start of the fourth set, sophomore Lillie Payne served the first four points, including an ace, to give the Lady Cougars a lead they would not give up.

The Hornets staved off one match point at 24-15, but after Haylee Garrison served an ace, she served the next ball long to give the Lady Cougars the win.

Against Western Hills, the Lady Cougars held the lead in the early going, but Western Hills took their first lead at 16-15. The Wolverines had a set point at 24-20 but a hitting error gave the serve back to the Lady Cougars. Senior Chloe Cox put away a kill to make it 24-22, but then put a ball into the net to give the Wolverines the first-set win.

The lead changed hands several times at the start of the second set, but with Grayson County up 8-6, senior Bailey Richardson served seven straight points, including an ace, to give the Lady Cougars a 15-6 lead.

With a set point at 24-17, the Lady Cougars evened the match at a set apiece when a Western Hills hitting attempt went long.

Grayson County led the whole way in the third set, but the Wolverines nearly erased a nine-point deficit when Olivia Barker served five straight points to bring them to within three points of the lead at 23-20.

The Wolverines staved off three set points before Robinson put away a kill to take the set for a 2-1 lead.

Grayson County trailed 7-8 when sophomore Emily Butler served three straight points to give Grayson County a lead they would not give back.

The Lady Cougars had a set point at 24-18 before Fernanda Fuentes blocked a shot at the net to give the serve back to the Wolverines. A Robinson hitting error made it 24-20 before a Wolverine hitting error ended the match.

Robinson led the Lady Cougars with 18 kills and added 11 digs. Cox led the team in digs with 16, while Richardson added 12. Boll had 17 assists to lead the Lady Cougars.
