The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has robbed the community of yet another event, as a popular Halloween destination has been cancelled.

An apologetic Angie Jones, Director of Grayson County Community Education, said on Monday, “Regretfully, it has become necessary to cancel Halloween Safe Spot at the fairgrounds this year. I am saddened by this but feel it is what needs to be done … Please accept my apologies.”

Jones added that traditional, door-to-door trick or treating remains an option for children unless county and/or city officials opt to cancel Halloween activities due to the pandemic.

Safe Spot regularly draws hundreds of children from around Grayson County as local businesses and service providers converge on the Grayson County Fairgrounds to hand out candy to costumed children.

Earlier this month, the Public Trails Association of Grayson County announced on its Facebook page that the Treats on the Trail Halloween event was cancelled. The two Halloween destinations join the Grayson County Fair and Clarkson Honeyfest as events cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In total, Grayson County has had 412 people test positive for the virus as of Thursday, September 24, the last update provided by the Grayson County Health Department, with 32 “active” cases.

The county had 167 cases of the virus diagnosed between August 25 and September 25 (5.6 per day).
