Lady Cougars win ninth in a row, 3-1 over Muhlenberg County

The Lady Cougar volleyball team continued its winning ways on Tuesday, defeating Muhlenberg County 3-1 ((20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20) for their ninth win in a row, which matches the longest winning streak in program history.

Seniors Chloe Cox and Ella Robinson both put away 21 kills to lead the team. Senior setter Brieanna Boll led the team with 35 assists while senior libero Bailey Richardson had 28 digs to lead the team. Robinson also had 19 digs, while senior Alexis Brown had 12. Sophomore Lillie Payne had three blocks to lead the Lady Cougars. Senior Knzie Skaggs led the servers with six aces.

As has become something of a pattern lately, the Lady Cougars dropped the first set, but came back to take the next three to win the match.

Grayson County never led in the first set, falling behind by as many as eight points, 13-21, before making a run at the end. Trailing by six, 17-23, Boll served three straight to pull to within three of the lead before Payne was whistled for being in the net, giving the Mustangs a set point.When Boll was called for being under the net, the Mustangs had the first set win.

Grayson County held a narrow lead for most of the second set. They led by two, 22-20 when Richardson took the serve and served out for the win. A Mustang hitting error at set point tied the match at a set apiece.

The Lady Cougars were in command of the third set after racing out to an early 7-1 lead. They led by four points, 16-12, when Cox put away three straight kills to push the lead to seven. Leading by six, 23-17, Robinson had two straight kills with Cox serving to give the Lady Cougars a 2-1 lead in the match.

Grayson County led in the early going, 4-2, before Mustang senior Daisy Ritchie served six straight points, including a pair of aces, to give her team a five point lead, 4-9. Robinson had a kill to end the run.

With the score tied at 11-11, Boll took the serve and reeled off five straight, including kills by Robinson, Cox and senior Kenzie Skaggs to lead 16-11.

The Mustangs answered by scoring five straight to tie it again at 16-16.

The Lady Cougars led by two, 20-18, when Skaggs served three straight for a five-point lead 23-18. Ritchie served an ace to make it a three-point game before Richardson dug an impossible ball for a match point at 24-20.

Robinson served the next point and Cox put away a kill to give the match to the Lady Cougars.

With the win, the Lady Cougars moved to 11-1 on the season.
