The Graves County Eagles laid a 45-0 whipping on the Grayson County Cougars last Friday evening in Mayfield.

It was a complete beat-down. The Cougars gave up 440 yards of offense to the Eagles, while compiling just 203 yards of their own. Eagles quarterback John Ben Brown completed 12-of-18 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Clint McKee ran 16 times for 183 yards and three scores. Wide receiver Mason Grant had six catches for 142 yards and two TDs.

The Cougars went three-and-out on their first possession and punted the ball to the Eagles, who took over on the 50-yard line. They moved to a first-and-goal at the Cougar seven before Grayson County rose up to push them back to the 17. On fourth-and-goal there, kicker Conner Thomas kicked a 35-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead with 5:54 left in the first period.

Grayson County took the ensuing kickoff at their own 35 and moved inside the Eagle 10 as the second quarter began. But on fourth-and-1 at the four came up short and turned the ball back over to the Eagles.

The Cougars forced an Eagle punt and took over at the 25, but on third down Cougar quarterback Kaylor Decker threw an interception in the end zone. That was the Cougars’ last gasp as the Eagles turned up the heat immediately.

Taking over at their own 20, the Eagles moved 80 yards in just three plays, with McKee getting loose for a 57-yard touchdown run to make it 10-0 with 5:17 left in the second period.

The Cougars took over at their own 36-yard line and moved quickly to the Eagle 36 on three straight runs by Mason Miller. But Miller fumbled on his last run and the Eagles recovered the ball and quickly scored again.

Brown hit Grant with a sideline pass on first down and the junior receiver raced 64 yards for another score to make it 17-0 with 3:51 left in the first half.

Grayson County took the ensuing kickoff and moved from their own 20, down to the Eagles 35, but gave up the ball there on downs with 18 seconds left.

But that was just enough time for another Eagle score. On a second-and-10 from the Eagle 45 and with just one second showing on the clock, Brown hit Grant with a pass down the sideline for another score as time expired, making it 24-0 at the half.

The Eagles had the ball to open the second half and took just one play to get on the board again. McKee raced 55-yards for the score, making it 31-0 at the 11:12 mark.

The Cougars went three-and-out on their next possession and the Eagles took over at their own 31. It took them 11 plays and 4:11 to score again with McKee carrying in from the 17. That made it 38-0 and the clock began running continuously.

The Eagles added one more score as Brown hit Race Richards with a 16-yard pass with 11:46 left to play. Neither team would score afterward.

The Cougars are now 4-1 for the season and will travel to Ohio County this coming Friday night to take on the Eagles at 7 p.m.
