Beshear: COVID ‘is everywhere’ as governor reports nearly 7,500 new cases over weekend, 45 deaths

Over the weekend, Gov. Andy Beshear reported a combined 7,472 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Kentucky on Saturday (4,240) and Sunday (3,232).

Over the last five days, officials have reported 22,875 new COVID-19 cases, an average of 4,575 cases per day. The new cases increase the state’s COVID-19 victim count to 303,625 (about one case per 14.5 Kentucky residents).

Officials reported 45 new deaths over the weekend, raising the commonwealth’s death toll to 2,901 (one percent fatality rate). Kentucky has now had 129 COVID-19-related deaths in five days (25.8 per day), and 993 deaths over the last 41 days (24.2 per day).

“This is everywhere, and we all have a duty to fight back against it,” Beshear declared. “We need you to be at your very best.”

The rolling seven-day positivity rate rose from 11.91 percent on Friday to 12.32 percent on Saturday, before checking in at 12.45 percent on Sunday.

Hospitalizations fell by 35 patients to 1,713 over the weekend, while intensive care patients dropped by 13 people to 380. Victims on ventilators decreased by five patients to 212.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 14,560 (4.8 percent) people have been hospitalized, with 3,228 (1.1 percent) patients treated in intensive care.

At least 39,006 (12.9 percent) Kentuckians have recovered from the virus, and nearly 3.6 million COVID-19 tests have been administered in the state.
