Second-half blitz propels Lady Cougars to 47-37 victory over LaRue County

The Lady Cougars put together a 27-1 blitz of the LaRue County Lady Hawks on Monday in the Cougar Den to overcome a 14-point, third-quarter deficit and send them on to a 47-37 win to move to 6-5 on the year.

Grayson County put three players into double figures, led by a career-high 17 points from sophomore guard Aryssa Riggs. She added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals on the night. Seniors Rachael Snyder and Ella Robinson both had double-double nights with Snyder scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, and Robinson having 11 points and 10 boards.

There were three ties and three lead changes in a first period that ended with the Lady Cougars holding a one-point lead, 13-12. LaRue opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run that gave them a six-point lead, 19-13 with 4:25 left in the period. A three-pointer by Katelyn Eads with 2:04 left gave the Lady Hawks their largest lead of the first half, nine points at 27-18, which is how the first half ended.

A 15-footer by Maddie Cima at 3:33 of the third quarter completed a 7-2 Lady Hawk run opening the period that gave the Lady Hawks their largest lead of the night, 14 points at 34-20. That’s when the Lady Cougars came to life.

Grayson County closed out the period with 10 unanswered points to pull to within four points of the lead, 34-30 at the start of the fourth quarter.

LaRue’s Katelyn Williams opened the scoring in the fourth quarter by hitting 1-of-2 at the foul line to break the Lady Cougar streak and make it 35-30. Grayson County then scored the next 17 straight points, making it 47-35 with 59.5 seconds left in the game to run away with the win.

Emma Moore scored 15 points to lead the Lady Hawks.

Annie Kiper scored five points, and added two rebounds and a team-high four assists. Mikah Lee scored one point to close out the Lady Cougar scoring.
