The Kentucky State Police is investigating an officer involved shooting in Laurel County.

Kentucky State Police said that Saturday night at approximately 10:45, troopers were contacted by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office and asked to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred on Chestnut Way, about a half-mile west of London.

According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies Hobie Daugherty and James Fox responded to a complaint about 59-year-old Michael V. Collins, of London, refusing to leave the complainant’s property while also threatening to shoot the complainant.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies made contact with Collins, as the suspect was laying on the ground in a wooded area, with a handgun pointed at Daugherty. After Collins refused commands to drop the weapon, Daugherty shot Collins in the shoulder and abdomen, Sheriff John Root said.

Collins was transported to Saint Joseph’s Hospital in London and later transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Police said Collins is in critical but stable condition, according to Root.

The investigation is ongoing and being led by KSP Lt. Tony Dingess.
