Cougars beat Bullitt Central 54-51 in overtime

The Grayson County Cougars picked up their tenth win of the season Monday night at Bullitt Central High School, 54-51 in overtime.

The Cougars led for much of the game, but were trailing 43-40 when Keegan Sharp buried a three-pointer with :00.3 seconds remaining to tie it and send it into overtime.

This was a game of runs, with first one team putting on a run, then the other responding. The score was tied 6-6 with 3:05 left in the first period when the Cougars scored the final eight points of the quarter to lead 14-6 heading into the second period.

Dillon Horn hit a turn-around jumper at 2:43 of the second quarter that completed a 7-2 run to give the Cougars their largest lead of the first half, 10 points at 21-11. They led by nine, 24-15 at the half.

Sharp hit a three at the 7:26 mark of the third quarter that gave Grayson County its largest lead of the night, 13 points at 28-15. Bullitt Central responded by closing out the period on an 11-2 run to trail by just four points, 30-26 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Central’s Gavin Hedges scored on a lay-in to open the fourth quarter scoring to cut their deficit to just two points, 30-28 at 7:24. The Cougars answered back with an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to 10 points, 38-28 with 3:30 left to play.

Central answered with three three-pointers and a free throw in a 10-0 run that tied the score 38-38 with 2:15 left in regulation.

River Blanton hit a pair of free throws with 2:01 left to put the Cougars on top 40-38, but Hedges scored five straight points to put Central up 43-40 with 44.4 seconds left, setting up Sharp’s heroics at the end.

Grayson County opened the overtime period by scoring the first seven points to lead 50-43 with 2:11 left and Central was never closer than three points the rest of the way.

Hunter Coleman led Central with 18 points, while Hedges had 17.

Sharp led Grayson County with 17 points, while Blanton added 16 points and seven rebounds. Chandler McCrady just missed double figures, finishing with nine points and he added four rebounds.

Brayden Childress scored six points, while Dillon Horn had four. Horn led the Cougars on the glass with 10 rebounds. Hunter Tomes had two points to complete the Cougar scoring.
