The Grayson County Board of Education is seeking feedback from parents and students regarding a recently passed Kentucky General Assembly bill that created the Supplemental School Year Program (SSYP).

“Senate Bill 128, signed into law this spring, created the SSYP, also referred to as the ‘do-over bill,’” school officials said. “The program allows students in grades K – 12 to request to use the 2021-22 school year as a supplemental school year.”

The intent of the bill is not for students to “simply gain an additional year to explore new coursework,” officials emphasized, but rather to allow “students to re-take or supplement courses previously taken during the 2020-2021 year.”

The school district asks parents to “carefully review information in the resources below to determine if this is an option you wish to pursue for your child.”

May 1 deadline to decide

Students have until May 1 to submit a request to their local board of education. If you do not have access to the form, paper copies will be available at your child’s school.

According to the bill, the local board has until June 1 to decide whether to accept all submitted requests or no requests for the supplemental year. The bill does not provide for individual case decisions.

Informational session with the superintendent

The district will host informational sessions with Superintendent Doug Robinson Thursday, April 22, at the Board of Education office on Shaw Station Road:

  • 5:30 Elementary Parents
  • 6:00 Middle School Parents
  • 6:30 High School Parents

Anyone who is unable to attend that evening and/or have additional questions, please contact the board office at 270-259-4011, or reach out to your school.
