Senior right-hander Dain Hawkins was masterful on Monday in Whitesville as he shut out the Whitesville Trinity Raiders 2-0 on two hits. He  walked three, struck out eight and hit a batter.

Between the end of the first inning and the start of the fifth, Hawkins retired 11 straight batters. The streak ended with one out in the fifth inning when he walked catcher Connor Hatfield, but Hawkins promptly picked Hatfield off first base.

The Cougars scored the only run they would need in the first inning when Hawkins led off with a triple to left field and later scored on a wild pitch by Whitesville starter and loser, Landon Huff. Huff pitched well enough to win, allowing two runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out seven.

The Cougars added a run in the fourth. Mason Miller led off with a single to right. Two outs later, shortstop Ethan Snyder singled to right, moving Miller to third. On the throw back to the infield, Snyder took off for second base and was safe when the throw from first-baseman Mason Mattingly was late. Miller kept running and scored easily on the play.

With two outs in the seventh, Hawkins walked a batter and hit another to put runners at first and second, but he induced third-baseman Nolan Mills to ground out to end the game.
