A Wayne County man has been charged with federal wire fraud after accepting payments for Tiny Homes that he did not own.

Timothy M. Kelley, of Monticello, was charged in federal court with seven counts of wire fraud for taking money from out-of-state buyers of Tiny Homes he falsely marketed as his property. He received more than $6,000 from at least three would-be buyers via Walmart2Walmart wire transfer.

Additionally, he accepted a $7,000 wire transfer from First Citizens Bank for an unknown number of Tiny Homes.

Kelley is accused of posting pictures of Tiny Homes on Facebook Marketplace claiming he built the homes, when in fact the homes were built and owned by other people.

After negotiating with the victims, Kelley would receive a down payment. He would then tell the victims that production of the homes had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kelley faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
