Whitesville Trinity’s Lady Raiders shut out the Grayson County Lady Cougars 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-13) in Tuesday’s 12th District Championship game, held at Edmonson County High School.
The Lady Cougars held a seven-point advantage at 20-13 in the first set, but gave up a 13-4 run to the Lady Raiders to drop the first set.
The two teams were separated by just a point or two in the second set until the Lady Raiders’ Georgia Howard took the serve with her team trailing by one, 10-9. Howard served five straight points, highlighted by three kills from senior Cassidy Morris, to take a lead they would not give back.
Grayson County managed to score only two more points the rest of the set. Senior libero Taylor Pedley took the serve leading 20-12 and served out for the win. Pedley served an ace and Morris had two more kills in the run, including one at set point.
The Lady Cougars held a 7-6 lead in the third set when sophomore Hannah Nash put away a spectacular kill to tie the match at 7-7. Junior Josie Aull followed by serving four straight points, including an ace, to give the Lady Raiders the lead for good.
Morris had a kill that took the match to match point, 13-24, when a Grayson County hitting error gave the Lady Raiders the victory.
Following the match, senior Grace Henderson was named to the 12th District All-Academic team. Juniors Lillie Payne and Emily Butler were named to the all 12th District regular season team, and they were also named to the All-Tournament team.
