A report of a suspicious person has led to the arrest of a Louisville man accused of stealing materials from a longtime Grayson County law enforcement official.

Thursday night at approximately 10:20, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Luedke was notified that a suspicious man had parked in the driveway of a residence in the 9500 block of Shrewsbury Road. Witnesses said the man, 35-year-old Joseph E. Goldsmith, was behaving erratically and had cinder blocks and wood hanging out of the trunk of his Dodge Charger.

The man left the area traveling north on Shrewsbury Road toward Leitchfield, with Luedke making contact with the suspect as the sergeant traveled south on Shrewsbury Road. Luedke turned around and followed the Charger to FiveStar Food Mart at 308 South Main Street.

An investigation by Luedke and Sgt. Clay Boone revealed the cinder blocks and lumber had been stolen from Grayson County Constable Mark Stanton. Stanton arrived on scene and identified the items as his.

Goldsmith was arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking, careless driving, harassment, and failure to produce an insurance card. He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

Prior to being elected 5th District Constable in 2018, Stanton served for many years as a special deputy with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.
