Grayson County splits season-opening, boy/girl doubleheader

Grayson County opened its new basketball season Tuesday evening in the Cougar Den with a boy/girl doubleheader against the Breckinridge County Tigers.

In the opener, the Lady Tigers put a 40-point whipping on the Lady Cougars, 65-25. In the second game, the Cougars never trailed in the game as they defeated the Tigers 61-55.

LADY COUGARS VS BRECK

Two free throws by Sydney Perkins with 2:27 left in the first period tied the score at 6-6. That would be as close to a lead as the Lady Cougars would get the rest of the night.

Breck scored the last five points of the period and led 11-6. They led 28-12 at the half.

Breck outscored the Lady Cougars 22-8 in the third quarter to lead by 30 points, 50-20 heading into the final period of play. When Kayleigh Huffines scored on a lay-in with 3:26 left to play, the lead had ballooned to 35 points and the clock began running continuously.

Breck senior Isabel Grimes led all scorers in the game with 25 points, and Sydney Tucker scored 19.

Perkins led the Lady Cougars with 20 points, including four three-pointers. Junior Aryssa Riggs finished with three points, and Briley Renfrow had two to complete the Lady Cougar scoring.

COUGARS VS BRECK

This game was tied once, at 2-2 following a lay-in by Breck’s Mercer Rogers at the 5:31 mark of the first period. The Cougars led the rest of the way.

Junior River Blanton had a big first half for the Cougars, scoring 19 of his game-high 26 points to help the Cougars to a 10-point lead, 31-21 at the half.

When the Cougars opened the second half with a 10-2 run, they held their largest lead of the night, 18 points at 41-23. They led by 12 points, 43-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

Breck then spent the fourth quarter whittling away at the lead. When Hunter Barr hit one of two free throws with 20 seconds left, the lead had been cut to just four points, 59-55. Breck would not score again.

Colton Miller came off the bench to lead the Tigers in scoring, hitting four three-pointers and finishing with 19 points.

In addition to his 26 points, Blanton also led the team on the glass with 10 rebounds. Senior Keegan Sharp joined Blanton in double figures with 12 points, and senior Chandler McCrady had 10.

Seventh-grader Jack Logsdon finished with eight points, senior Hunter Tomes had three points and seven rebounds, while Junior Brayden Childress closed out the scoring with two points.
