Two teenagers have perished in a fire in Rowan County.

The Morehead Fire Department responded to the blaze Tuesday morning at approximately 7:00 and found a shed and adjacent travel trailer engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the fire, the bodies of 18-year-old Charles Meade, of Morehead, and 17-year-old Deegan Beane, of Carter County, were discovered.

Beane was a senior at West Carter High School. He was visiting Meade, who lived on the property.

The two died of smoke inhalation, according to Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt. The bodies have been transported to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies.

Kentucky State Police said the fire appears to be accidental and could be related to propane use. Police also said the travel trailer/shed combo was likely a makeshift residence, as the structure had a bed and heating unit but no running water or smoke detectors.

The investigation is ongoing.
