Firefighters battled a fire that engulfed over four dozen round hay bales just outside of Caneyville.

Wednesday morning at approximately 3:30, the Caneyville Fire Department responded to a field in the 100 block of Higgs Road on the report of hay bales on fire. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found about 50 large, round hay bales on fire.

Caneyville fire personnel battled the fire for about three hours before clearing the scene.

Hay bales are extremely difficult to extinguish, as hot spots can develop inside the bales without showing outward signs of heat or fire, even after being thoroughly sprayed with water.

Caneyville FD returned to the scene at noon and continued fighting multiple flame-ups for over two hours.

The owner of the hay told Caneyville Fire Chief Brian Pharris that the bales had been in the field for about two months. It’s unclear how the fire began, but Pharris said it’s possible the blaze was intentionally set.

Pharris added that it took 14,800 gallons of water to complete the job.
