(Clarkson, KY)-The first steps to a community center have been taken by the Clarkson City Commissioners over the past months with ideas shared and plans sketched out. Monday evening Mayor Bonnie Henderson said the group had decided to ask Kentucky Senator Carroll Gibson to add the community center to his yearly proposed budget in hopes it will be approved. Henderson said if the budget is not approved then the city will begin to pursue grant options. She said she still has not received a quote for the center but the commissioners are hoping to incorporate city hall offices in with the community center. Henderson said Senator Gibson is also requesting money for the Hwy 224 widening project in his budget.
Mayor Henderson said she would like to see a committee form and take charge of a book project that could be used as a fund raiser for the community center. The history book will explore the foundation of Clarkson, its business and religious communities and its family’s heritage who originally settled in the area. The commissioners are seeking the help of anyone who would like to work on the project. If you are interested, you can call Clarkson City Hall at 270-242-6997.
Clarkson and the surrounding area hosts the highest number of “Clothesline for Quilts” quilt blocks, according to Grayson County Extension Agent Joan Martin. Martin asked the commissioners for their support is finding ways for the City of Clarkson to promote the Clothesline for Quilts tour and hopefully “bring people off of the main highways and into our county where they will more than likely buy gas and food.” The goal is to have local businesses promote the quilt tour by offering people, who have a tour brochure, a small discount in their store. The quilt blocks have received a lot of attention since its incorporation in Grayson County in 2008. There are 53 quilt blocks purchased in the county with 50 already in place hanging on barns and businesses.
