Cougars Light Up Edmonson Co In Tobacco Bowl

Leitchfield - The Grayson County Cougars clinched the 2013 Tobacco Bowl with a decisive 36-3 victory over the Edmonson County Wildcats. Rebounding from a previous week's loss at Central Hardin, The Cougars did not disappoint their home opening crowd.

Both teams let their defensives do the talking in the first quarter. Conservative play calling early allowed both defenses to tighten the line of scrimmage and make running the ball difficult. Thomas Walton was the workhorse throughout the night, busting gaps and finding daylight on his own turf.  Ty Lee, Edmonson Counties Senior running back was injured early in the game and was not able to return to play. His absence from the Wildcat offense limited their options.

Multiple miscues in the first half included a touchdown saving interception by the Cougars. It was the defense that established the tempo of the game early. After Thomas Walton put the Cougars on the board, the extra point went wide to give Grayson County a 6-0 lead.  Several bad snaps, a fumble and an errant on-side kick kept the Cougar defense in the trenches.

A late field goal by the Cougars gave them a 9-0 lead going into halftime.  The Tobacco Bowls was still anybody's game at halftime.

Halftime adjustments included more pressure on Edmonson Counties young Quarterback Jake Dial. Dial a true freshman, showed his ability to "Run Forrest Run" as Lane Rackley, Jacob Vincent and the rest of the D Line made it rough to find any daylight up the middle. The Cougars on the other hand opened up the offense and started to move the ball around. The "Iron Man", Dylan Woodcock showed his ability to find the open field on multiple occasions. Dakota Payton had the fresh legs in the second half and added valuable yards to the offense.

Where's there's smoke there's fire, and the Cougars came out firing on all cylinders. With a solid Trey Waltermire at the helm, the Coaches decided it was time to see if Talon Gary was ready to return to the QB position. Gary has seen limited play in special packages, as a receiver and a defender since his injury in the pre-game scrimmage.

It didn’t take long to see that Gary was ready to take the snap.

Gary hooked up with multiple receivers including Trey Waltermire who is a very talented wide receiver as well as the backup QB. The precision off the ball was noticeable and the Cougars stacked multiple sticks up and down the field as they scored multiple times in the second half.

Although Grayson County is a running team, the option package gives both Waltermire and Gary real-time options. Defenses have to pursue from the weak side and close on the gaps. Defensive pressure can lead to Cougar opportunities when the offense is clicking. The intermediate pass is very effective for the Cougars. They are quick in the open field and did a great job of moving the tobacco sticks, all night long.

The river runs through this defense. Lane Rackley, The Taco Bell Player of the game, was double-teamed all night and still made multiple stops, tackles and sacks. His intensity on defense is contagious and the entire Cougar defense embraces that attitude. The secondary and linebacking corp made great reads, stayed home and made plays.
