Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4:55, an explosion rocked the campus of Murray State University, extensively damaging a residence hall.

The explosion, which authorities believe was caused by a gas leak, injured one person, who was transported to Murray-Calloway County Hospital where he’s listed in stable condition. The identity of the victim has not been released by authorities.

The school’s web site says the affected dorm, New Richmond Hall, is a four story building that houses nearly 270 students.

Murray State is host to several summer residential programs, and the school’s Facebook page said, “All participants in Adventures in Math and Science (AIMS), Governor Scholars Program (GSP) and Commonwealth Honors Academy (CHA) have been relocated.”

According to media reports, Governor's Scholar Program participants, including GCHS students Jackson Parker, Jasmine Smart, Jonathan Loughran, Sydney Rogers, and Sarah Bratcher — are safe and accounted for.
