WALTON, Ky. (AP) — A former northern Kentucky mayor has been sentenced to 60 days in jail after pleading guilty to abusing the public trust by selling metal that belonged to the Boone County Water District.
Phil Trzop (TER'-zop) was also ordered by Boone County Circuit Judge J.R. Schrand on Wednesday to perform 120 hours of public service and pay a $1,000 fine.
The Kentucky Enquirer (http://bit.ly/16YlxsJ) reported Thursday that Schrand gave Trzop until Friday to report to the local jail.
Police had arrested Trzop last November for allegedly selling scrap metal from the utility. He later admitted to burying $5,100 in taxpayer money in his backyard after questions were raised about the utility's finances.
A subsequent audit found an additional $7,600 unaccounted for.
