On January 11, 2014, 20 GCMS students earned chairs in the KMEA 4th District All-District Band. To earn spots in the band, students had to be one of the best among hundreds of students in the area, which includes 18 schools in Breckinridge, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, Larue, Marion, Meade, Taylor, and Washington Counties.
At the auditions, held at Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown, students performed scales, played prepared excerpts, and sight-read. The highest scoring students from these auditions earned “chairs” in the All-District Bands.
Gary Parker, Director, said, “These students should be praised for their efforts. Achieving at this level requires many hours of home practice.”
“We’re really excited for our students, and we’re excited about the reputation that we’ve established. Our students are taking pride in knowing that they’re part of a winning organization. And this goes on to the next level with the high school band. Hopefully these students realize they are the cream of the crop, and they want to keep that going at the high school.”
Barry Duvall, Director, said, “We’re very proud of this showing, especially some of the high placements of many of our players. The students put in a lot of time on this before and after school. They deserve the great experience of All-District. The learning they do at All-District Band will help make our own band stronger.”
The All-District Band Concert will be held at 3 pm CST on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Meade County High School auditorium in Brandenburg. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
