The woman who gave birth while being held in the Franklin County Regional Jail earlier this week could face additional charges after the baby was born addicted to drugs.
Kelsey G. Love, 28, of New Albany, Indiana, was indicted Monday for receiving stolen property and driving under the influence. She gave birth at the jail Tuesday morning.
The Franklin County Commonwealth Attorney told news outlets that, “The baby has been going through hell, being born already suffering from withdrawal symptoms.” Prosecutors say they are considering adding a charge of wanton endangerment against Love because of her alleged drug use during her pregnancy.
After she was arrested driving her mother’s stolen car over the weekend, Love told police she used methamphetamine and opiods, and that she had taken her mother’s car without permission.
Love faces up to 10 years in prison on the receiving stolen property charge, and if prosecutors proceed with charging her with wanton endangerment, she could face an additional five years imprisonment.
