Kentucky to expand preschool education program

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky officials are expanding a program that seeks to help parents turn everyday life into learning experiences for their preschool-aged children.

Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear announced Monday the state would pay for 25 "bornlearning Academies" this fall. It's part of a four-year plan to establish 150 academies across the state.

The academies began in northern Kentucky about five years ago as an offshoot of a United Way advertising campaign. Parents of young children attend six family-oriented training sessions at local elementary schools that help them understand their child's early development and how they can promote learning.

The program is paid for through a $1.4 million federal grant and a $1 million donation from Toyota.
