Leitchfield Tourism Commission hears about possible problem at Aquatic Center

The Leitchfield Tourism Commission heard from representatives of Alliance Corporation, the construction company building the new Aquatic Center.

Initially, the report from Alliance was positive regarding the progress of the Aquatic Center, but a question was soon raised about a “test run” which was conducted early on Tuesday morning -- Three minutes into the testing cycle, water “flowed up” through the drains in the pump station; something that isn’t supposed to happen.

According to Alliance representatives, it could be a pipe size issue or possibly an obstruction which caused the water the rise up through the floor drains. Alliance reps said they were going to the Aquatic Center later Tuesday morning to “work through the problem.”

When Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson asked Alliance representatives if “we’re still okay for Friday and Saturday,” meaning the soft opening on Friday night and the public opening of the Center on Saturday, the Alliance rep responded, “We were last night about 9:00.”

As of publication of this article, the Aquatic Center is still scheduled to host city employees and their families for a dress rehearsal on Friday night from 5:00 until 8:00. The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10:00 on Saturday morning, with the gates opening to the public at 10:30.

In other Tourism news, Randy Pauley was selected as the Chairman of the Commission, with Ryan Bratcher being named Vice Chairman. Angie Jones was tabbed as the new Secretary and Joyce Mudd, Treasurer.

The change in office-holders officially goes into effect at the next Tourism Commission meeting in July.

It was also announced that the annual Twin Lakes Fiddler’s Contest will be held July 18 and 19. The Car Cruise, Beauty Pageant and Fireworks will take place on Friday night, with additional activities taking place on Saturday.

The downtown square will be closed to vehicle traffic from 5:00 on Friday night the 18th, through Sunday morning at 8:00 to accommodate the contest and the other entertainment and activities taking place.
