An Owensboro police officer has been killed in an ATV accident in Daviess County.

According to police, 32-year-old Kenneth Blake Roberts, of Philpot, was driving a Polaris side-by-side with two rear seats, when he abruptly changed directions, causing the vehicle to roll over.

Two passengers were uninjured, but 47-year-old Lewis Varble was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while 20-year-old John Holley received a serious eye injury and is in critical condition at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, according to media reports.

Roberts died Monday afternoon.

He was hired by Owensboro Police Department in May as a police officer and was in his sixth week of training at the Department of Criminal Justice Academy in Richmond.

He leaves behind a wife, Sammi, and two young daughters.
