At Thursday night’s Grayson County School Board meeting, the directors of the district’s Family Resource and Youth Service Centers (FRC) updated board members on the activities each school is offering.

Clarkson FRC director Ann Brooks noted that last year, there were 13 to 14 children who attend Clarkson Elementary who were being raised by their grandparents, but this year that number jumped to 44 children. Brooks said that in response, the school is now offering ongoing seminars, entitled “Coffee and Conversations,” that allow the affected grandparents to learn the best avenues to aid the children, as far each one’s education is concerned.

Barbara Allen, FRC director at Lawler and Grayson County High School, said the Born Learning program, now in its third year at the school, is the most consistent parent program they have ever attempted, saying that parents are coming back year-after-year to the program.

Wanda Faye Critchelow, who is retiring effective Dec. 31, said the Big Smiles Dental Program has been an effective tool at Wilkey Elementary, as last year 71 children took advantage of the dental check-up opportunity, with more children expected to utilize the program this year.

Caneyville FRC director Kim Cannon praised the Christmas assistance program, reporting that 92 children were helped after parents and the community offered support for the holiday program. Cannon also noted that Caneyville has 44 kids involved in the backpack initiative, which provides backpacks for disadvantaged children.
