(LEXINGTON, Ky.) The American Spiritual Ensemble, a University of Kentucky choral group, is performing at the annual meeting of the Southern Division of the American Choral Directors Association.
The association meeting, which is meeting this week in Memphis, brings together choral music professionals from 11 states.
The American Spiritual Ensemble is led by UK Opera Theatre director Everett McCorvey. He called the performance before the association the highlight of the group's 15 years of performing.
A news release from UK says McCorvey founded the ensemble in 1995 with the mission of keeping American Negro spiritual music alive. The group performs classic spirituals, jazz and Broadway numbers highlighting the black experience.
It has recorded four CDs and performed around the world. It was also featured in the 2007 PBS documentary "The Spirituals."
