Thunder Over Louisville travel delays

Since 1990, the city of Louisville has regaled millions of people with its spectacular Thunder Over Louisville air and fireworks show on the banks of the Ohio River. The extravaganza is Saturday, and serves to kick off the Kentucky Derby Festival, which culminates in the Run for the Roses on May 3.

The air show begins at 2:00 central time, with the fireworks beginning at 8:30 central time.

For those traveling to Louisville from the south, be aware that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has issued a release pertaining to an active construction zone which will likely cause traffic delays:

The Kentucky Department of Transportation will once again have construction crews working along I-65 this weekend. Northbound traffic will be slowed to two lanes around the 105 mile marker -- near Lebanon Junction -- starting at midnight on Friday, April 11, 2014, and extending until 5:00 A.M. EST on Monday, April 14, 2014. If you are heading North you may want to seek an alternate route or plan for extra time due to possible delays.

There are several alternate routes to take in order to by-pass the construction zone, including:
  • At Elizabethtown, take 31W North (Dixie Highway) into Louisville.
  • At Elizabethtown, take Hwy 62 East to Bardstown, turning left onto 31E (Louisville Road), which will take one into Louisville.
  • At Elizabethtown, take Hwy 61 North (Preston Highway) into Louisville.
There are other routes to consider, and travelers are encouraged to investigate the possibilities.
