PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — A western Kentucky sheriff's deputy has resigned after an internal probe concluded he had inappropriate relationships with women while on duty.

McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden says 37-year-old Sgt. Tom Crabtree would have been fired if he hadn't left voluntarily.

Hayden told The Paducah Sun that the investigation, which started after a Jan. 25 call, showed Crabtree had consensual, but inappropriate, relationships with at least two women (http://bit.ly/zt5QAs).

Hayden says Crabtree also had 911 dispatchers patch through phone calls from Crabtree's cellphone to the women.

Crabtree's attorney, Jeremy Ian Smith, said neither he nor his client had a comment Thursday.

In his resignation letter, Crabtree did not admit to any inappropriate conduct.

Crabtree had been employed with the sheriff's department since December 1997.
