Langdon died Saturday from a stroke. Former co-workers and friends spoke out Monday about the impact the retired chief made.
Clemons said Langdon was his chief for 15 years and said much of his management style of the sheriff’s department is a direct influence from Langdon. “He taught me a lot about the ins and outs of how a budget works and the importance of getting your men to do what they need to do to be successful and how to be a positive influence in the community. He was my mentor.”
Langdon began his career at the Leitchfield Police Department in 1977. He served as detective before taking the reigns as chief in 1989. Langdon retired as police chief in December of 2004.
Leitchfield Police Captain Todd Cave said he was hired by Langdon in 1989 and was the reason he has been so active in the community. “He was like a father figure to many of us here,” said Cave. “Elmer followed his two boys all through their sports while they were in school and one of things he got me to be involved in was the Leitchfield Little League Tee-Ball program and the mentoring program at the middle school,” said Cave.
“Elmer was a very fine man and he was a great leader and a great boss for me. He hired me on in 1991 and he allowed me to come back to my hometown when I wanted to come here. He was a great mentor, leader and role model for the younger officers and we’re going to miss him,” said Leitchfield Police Chief Bart Glenn. He also said Langdon had an “open door policy” with is officers and was always willing to listen and give advice.
Office Manager at the Leitchfield Police Department Norma Saltsman worked with Langdon for 19 years and said he was a “super boss and a dear friend” and she would miss Langdon very much.
Langdon was also a husband and grandfather. His youngest son Bryan followed in his footsteps and became a Leitchfield Police Officer in 2007. Bryan now serves as the resource officer at the Grayson County High School through the LPD. Langdon’s eldest son Brad works for Farm Bureau. Langdon was also a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Leitchfield.
